How an audio story helps to make dementia a topic of conversation
The Shrinking Giant: an audio story that helps talk about dementia
In our work, we often meet families facing dementia. It is a process that affects not only the person themselves but also everyone around them. Talking about dementia remains difficult at times, especially with children. That is why we are happy to share a special audio story that helps make this topic open for discussion in a warm and accessible way.
A giant that shrinks, but never loses significance
The Shrinking Giant is a moving audio story by Het Geluidshuis. We meet Alois, a beloved village giant who leads a quiet life with his little dog Pompon. Until he suddenly begins to shrink. He becomes confused, insecure, and withdraws — recognizable to anyone experiencing dementia up close.
But Alois is not alone. His friends continue to surround him with warmth and understanding. For no matter how small he becomes, his significance remains just as great. The story uses a beautiful metaphor to explain what dementia can do to someone, without burdening or weighing them down.
The power of connection between young and old
What makes this audio story so special is the emphasis on intergenerational solidarity. Children, parents, and grandparents find each other in recognition and understanding. The story invites them to listen together, talk together, and feel together.
It is available in both Dutch and French (Le géant qui rétrécit), and was created in collaboration with Cera and the Expertise Centre for Dementia Flanders.
Extra: Science Expert explains dementia in a child-friendly way
In addition to the story, there is also a bonus episode of Wetenschapje. In this episode, Leen and Mathieu playfully dive into the science behind dementia. They answer questions such as: Can brains shrink?
It is a clear, child-friendly explanation that helps to better understand the subject — for young and old.
Highly recommended
The voices, music, and sound design make The Shrinking Giant a listening experience that touches. It is a valuable tool for families dealing with dementia, but also for schools, caregivers, and anyone who wants to introduce the topic in a gentle way.
